To our local charities, gifts of time are often as important as gifts of money. We hope that you will consider exploring one of the following opportunities to volunteer with a local organization.

 

CENTRAL KANSAS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION - volunteers are needed several times throughout the year to help prepare mailings, make copies, and assist with other administrative tasks.

PEACE CONNECTIONS - On-call and Saturday volunteers needed to answer the phone, welcome customers, and complete small jobs (such as stamping envelopes). Timeslots are 10-2 or 1-5 on weekdays and 10-2 on Saturday.

PEACE CONNECTIONS - Summer Food and Activity Program volunteers are needed during the months of June and July. Volunteers help provide supervision and conversation during meals and assistance with activities. Volunteers may choose to help on a designated day or days of the week or may volunteer for a couple of times during the summer.

PEACE CONNECTIONS - A volunteer is needed to help with dusting, vacuuming, etc. once or twice per month.

CARING HANDS HUMANE SOCIETY - Foster families are needed to give a second chance to orphaned puppies and kittens, animals with minor behavior problems and sick or injured animals until they are ready for adoption. Potential foster parents must complete an application and be interviewed. Training is provided. Foster parents must be at least 18 years old.

CARING HANDS HUMANE SOCIETY - Visiting Pets Program volunteers needed. You and your pet provide companionship, affection, and therapy through regular visits to retirement, rehabilitation, or residential treatment centers. Visiting Pets volunteers commit to two visits per month for one year. Comprehensive training and testing is required for you and your pet, so this opportunity will be provided when four or more interested parties have signed up for classes. There is a fee charged for this class. Volunteers may also have use of one of the approved pets from Caring Hands, which will not require any fees to be paid, or training and testing to take place. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

INTER-FAITH MINISTRIES - Volunteers are needed to assist with "Souper Bowl", an event to end childhood hunger. The event will be Friday, January 30, 2009. Volunteers are needed 9 am - 4 pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or accompanied by an adult. Groups are welcome.

INTER-FAITH MINISTRIES - Volunteers are needed to assist with "Crop Walk", an event to end childhood hunger. The event will be Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Sedgwick County Park. Volunteers are needed 11 am - 3 pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or accompanied by an adult. Groups are welcome.

NEWTON MEALS ON WHEELS - Volunteers are needed to deliver meals and check on the well-being of clients at 11 am once a week to Newton and North Newton. Volunteers must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation, and also need to be able to lift coolers with filled trays and climb stairs. The director will accompany first time volunteers for training. Current openings are Thursdays and Saturdays. Substitutes are always needed.

HESSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY - Volunteer library pages needed one to three afternoons weekly during the regular school year (1 ½ to 2 hour periods). Wednesdays are most needed. Volunteers will help sort, arrange and re-shelve returned library material; read shelves and keep material in the correct sequence; maintain neatness on shelves and in public areas; shift books and materials when necessary; maintain neatness in work areas, staff areas, and public areas; and other related tasks. No experience required, but knowledge of Dewey Decimal System and experience with alpha numeric filing would be helpful.
